THE ANAL METHOD MEASURING TEMPERATURE IN TODDLERS

MEASURING RECTAL TEMPERATURE


- Rectum or rectal is the bottom part from where the child poops


- Gives the most appropriate temperature


- There are rectal thermometers available in the market for measuring temperature


- It is usually considered for children below 3 years of age



MEASURING TEMPERATURE THROUGH A RECTAL (ANUS) THERMOMETER


- You can use a rectal thermometer or a digital thermometer for measuring temperature


- Clean the tip of the thermometer with little soap and warm water


- Dry the thermometer and apply a little petroleum jelly (vaseline) at the end of it


- Place your baby on her back on her bed


- Gently lift both her legs up and make them touch her chest


-Slowly insert the thermometer just about an inch into her rectum (anus)


- Firmly hold her buttocks with your palm so that the thermometer stays in its place


- You can support her legs with your elbow and hold her buttocks with the same hand


- With the other hand you can hold the thermometer


- Make sure that you do not lose your grip and patiently wait until the thermometer beeps


- Gently remove the thermometer as soon as you hear a beep sound


- Note down the temperature in a paper


- Clean the thermometer with little soap and warm water before putting it back


Note: 

If you insert something in your child's anus there are chances of her doing potty and hence do not worry if she does potty.



THINGS TO CONSIDER


- Make sure that you clean the thermometer before and after measuring the baby's temperature


- Avoid using the thermometer in other places like the armpit or under the tongue to measure temperature


- Do not insert the thermometer too deep into your child's anus
